EV cars are more affordable than ever, thanks to federal tax credits and state rebates that cover some of the cost. Plus, a recent study by the Electric Power Research Institute found that drivers will be saving $4,000 a year in fuel costs on an EV versus a gas-powered car.
They’re also surprisingly efficient. A report from the Department of Energy shows that a battery-powered EV is about three times as efficient as an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle.
That’s because they need less energy to run – about 59-62 percent of their electricity goes into moving the wheels, while gas-powered vehicles convert only 17-21 percent of the fuel they consume to move them.
And they’re easier to maintain than ICE cars. A typical ICE drivetrain has more than 200 moving parts, whereas an electric motor has about 17.
It’s even easier to charge your EV. Many EVs can be charged at home using an outlet, while some have charging stations on the road or in parking lots.
These chargers can be powered by a grid that is mostly renewable energy, like solar or wind. Or they can be fed directly by the onboard converter in some models.
The EVs that can accept both types of power are called ZEVs, or zero-emission vehicles. They can travel hundreds of miles on one charge and are becoming increasingly popular with consumers who want to save money or avoid pollution.
