Electric City Vehicles Cars Power

New Electric City Vehicles

EVs have lower fueling and lifetime maintenance costs, including battery replacement. EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, so they help to cut global warming pollution. And if powered by clean renewable energy, EVs are nearly carbon-free.

Ford is accelerating production of electric versions of its F-150 pickup truck and other SUVs. Its new plant in Ohio will build lithium-ion batteries for those vehicles and other EVs that the company plans to offer. The company will also work with LG Energy Solutions to manufacture battery cells in the US.

Chevrolet is working on an all-electric version of its Silverado pickup and plans to launch other electric iterations of the Equinox and Blazer sport utility vehicles. It will also build a new battery-powered version of its Bolt compact car.

Toyota is introducing more models that run on electric power, but will continue to offer vehicles with internal combustion engines as well. The company is investing in a battery factory in the US and will provide regenerative braking as an option on many of its models.

EVs make for an ideal commuter vehicle. They can use carpool lanes thanks to a Clean Air Vehicle decal, and can charge in the City’s free public charging stations, located in parking garages in many downtown areas. EVs are also easier to maintain than traditional cars, with simpler mechanical systems that require less frequent routine service.

NYC DOT is working with partners to expand access to charging in the five boroughs. The Mayor’s Office of Sustainability is installing 120 EV charger ports at curbside locations for rideshare, taxi and car rental vehicles, and in City-owned parking garages. bp is committing to install new EV fast-charging infrastructure at thousands of Hertz locations in the US and Siemens is pledging to make its entire fleet of maintenance vehicles electric by 2030.
