As automakers make major bets that millions of new cars and light trucks over the next decade will be plugged into electrical outlets, not fueled up at gas stations, it’s time to ask: Are the nation’s power grids ready for this surge?
Four Things Need to Happen
As electric vehicles (EVs) hit the road, the need for new recharging infrastructure will rise dramatically. These vehicles don’t have garages or driveways, so it’s critical to provide more public charging options.
Charging Facilities
The industry is investing a lot of money in fast chargers to improve their capacity and speed up the recharge process. That’s particularly important for EVs with long range, because they tend to charge slower than other models.
Getting More EVs onto the Road
The market is rapidly growing for EVs, and new ones are constantly being introduced. Some of the biggest names, such as Tesla, Ford and GM, have plans to introduce dozens of new plug-in models over the next decade.
GM recently announced that it will stop selling gasoline-powered cars and light trucks by 2035 and will pivot to battery-powered vehicles. The company is working with Pacific Gas & Electric to pilot bidirectional charging, which allows drivers to send energy back to the utility when they need it, a process that could help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and increase the resilience of the grid.
The transition to a zero-emissions fleet will have a dramatic impact on the nation’s power system, as will the emergence of a new breed of electric vehicles that are more efficient than their traditional combustion counterparts. These vehicles will require new investments in electricity generation and distribution to meet their demands, but the benefits are huge: Electricity use would plummet and emissions would drop significantly.
