The transition from gasoline to electricity powered cars is a critical part of the global effort to reduce carbon emissions. It will not be easy.
EVs have significant advantages over traditional vehicles, including higher MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) and lower costs. They also use fewer resources and emit less pollution.
New York’s Mayor de Blasio is working to increase EV adoption in the five boroughs by providing a comprehensive network of Level 2 Chargers and DC fast chargers across the city. These hubs are located in city-owned parking garages and lots and offer a charging experience comparable to a gas station.
Policy and Workforce Challenges
One of the biggest challenges to EVs is creating an affordable and accessible charging infrastructure for all Americans. This is particularly true in cities, where many residents do not have access to dedicated parking spots.
This will require innovative strategies, such as parking lots that have a designated charging station at the entrance and charging stations with pay-per-use pricing. In addition, local governments should take advantage of incentives offered by state and federal agencies to promote EV sales.
Strong policies and incentives are critical to the success of the EV industry, and to meet the Biden ZEV goal of 40% by 2025. California leads the nation in ZEV adoption, thanks to policies like rebates, mandates and low-carbon standards. However, there is still a long way to go before the country meets its emissions goals.
