How Do Electric City Vehicles Power Their Batteries?

Electric vehicles use electricity rather than gas to power their batteries. This energy is often generated using renewable sources, such as wind and sun, and can help reduce community fossil fuel use and greenhouse gases.
EVs can be recharged by plugging into a standard AC outlet, or they can use DC fast chargers that can power up a battery in about 30 minutes. A battery-only electric vehicle has a range of 100 to 300 miles on one charge, depending on the model. EVs that also have a gasoline engine, like the Nissan Leaf, have a range of about 500 miles on one tank of gas.
For the average driver, these driving distances should be plenty, although it’s important to remember that your mileage may vary based on temperature, accessory usage, and other factors. In addition, if your vehicle is equipped with a range extender (a device that adds a small amount of gasoline to the fuel tank), the additional gasoline can lower your driving range even more.
EVs can help us reach City goals for reducing community fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions. However, lack of access to charging stations can be a barrier to EV adoption, and the City is exploring ways to address this challenge.
