EVs are also cleaner and more resilient during outages. They can be designed to export their stored energy to the grid, allowing homeowners or businesses to keep operating until the power is restored. But EVs must be carefully designed to ensure that they don’t overload the system or cause expensive damage to electrical equipment.
The best way to get an idea of the EVs on the market is to check their MPGe ratings (miles per gallon equivalent), and look for models that offer long driving ranges to meet your needs. EVs are more efficient than gas-powered vehicles and emit significantly less pollution, especially when compared to older diesel vehicles.
Some EVs can even generate their own electricity. For example, a solar car can run on free sunlight during the day and then use its battery to store that power for later use at night when the sun sets. Electricity providers are exploring ways to optimize charging so that millions of EVs don’t all plug in at the same time and put a strain on their systems.
GreenLatinos, Hip Hop Caucus, Sierra Club and dozens of other groups are partnering to launch Route Zero in April — a nationwide, relay-style campaign that will highlight investments in EV manufacturing and driving infrastructure, and show how EV ownership helps mitigate the harms of pollution. The partnership will also educate people about EVs and help them take action by using the Campaign Toolkit.
