In the world of EVs, most shoppers fixate first on an EV’s EPA-rated range. That’s a good starting point, but there are many other factors to consider: the state of public charging in your area, perhaps the climate extremes where you drive, how much electricity (billed in kilowatt-hours) you typically use at home and where prices for that energy differ from what you pay for gasoline.
The efficiency of an EV also matters, meaning how many miles it can get out of the energy stored in its battery. A higher efficiency can mean you need to charge it less often, as well as reduce the amount of time you spend plugging in.
Whether you’re buying an EV or simply using one for work or recreation, access to public charging is a key limiting factor. The City, in partnership with organizations like EWEB, continues to explore ways to make EV charging more accessible for everyone, including those without a private charger.
As EVs continue to proliferate, New York City will need more juice to keep the wheels spinning. But don’t expect a quick fix: “You can’t put a million EVs on the road all at once,” says Gil Quiniones, CEO of the New York Power Authority. “That’ll crash the system.”
