Electric Vehicles and the Power Grid

EVs can be a great way to reduce air pollution, save money on fuel and support clean energy. But there are many questions to consider if you’re considering an EV purchase, including where you will charge and how much it will cost. You also need to plan for maintenance, replacement parts and tax breaks.

In addition, EV drivers must make smart choices about how they drive their cars to get the most out of them. This includes minimizing high-speed driving, maximizing efficient braking and cutting back on heating/cooling and accessory use.

Having reliable charging at work or in shopping centers and parking garages is vital for people who can’t afford to buy an electric car but want to help drive the change to a cleaner planet. That’s why a lot of EV buyers are choosing to lease, rather than purchase, their vehicles.

A growing number of localities and states are encouraging residents to adopt EVs by requiring charging stations. But they also need to ensure that the power grid can handle the increased load, especially during peak demand times in the evenings when everyone gets home from work and turns on their lights and appliances.

A national network of EV chargers is crucial to ease this burden, boosting private investment in the industry and supporting President Biden’s goal of 26 million electric vehicles on America’s roads by 2030. The federal government’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program is creating a coast-to-coast network that will give EV drivers confidence they can always find a spot to recharge, jump start manufacturing of new electric vehicles and chargers and help reduce emissions from the transportation sector.
