The Detroit Big Three—Ford, GM, and Stellantis (which mainly sells Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, and Jeep vehicles in the US)—have all set aggressive goals for electric vehicle sales. By 2030, they want 40% to 50% of their cars and trucks to be electric. That might seem far off now, when EVs are only a single-digit percentage of overall sales, but as compelling new models arrive and EV driving range continues to improve, consumer demand is expected to accelerate quickly.
EVs use electric motors with rechargeable batteries to free their drives from fossil fuels, which means they are more environmentally friendly than vehicles powered by gasoline or diesel. And because they operate primarily on electricity, EVs have lower operating costs than gas-powered vehicles. A typical EV can travel up to 300 miles on a charge, although the actual driving range will depend on many factors, including climate conditions, accessory usage, and speed.
While the Ford Fusion Energi and Chevy Bolt are among the newest EVs on the market, there’s also a wide variety of other models that can be had for an affordable price. The Renault ZOE, for instance, is a compact model perfect for getting around town, and it has the added benefit of regenerative braking that can help owners earn money from their charging station. And with a quick charge at one of Seattle’s numerous public DC fast-charging stations, the ZOE can be back up to 80 percent of its full capacity in just 36 minutes.
