Electric City Vehicles Cars Power

The decision to buy an electric vehicle is a huge one and can be complicated by questions about how and where to charge, what to expect in terms of range, what the tax breaks are, and so on. But once you’ve made the leap, there’s a whole new world to explore.

Electric cars can save drivers money on fuel and maintenance, and provide a quieter driving experience. Their engines don’t have to build revs to produce power, and their instant-on torque means they can accelerate much faster than traditional vehicles — especially at lower speeds.

EVs typically have more interior space than gas-powered vehicles because the engine and transmission don’t take up room. The batteries can also be configured to allow for additional storage in the floor of the car or trunk. And because they don’t need to generate as many gallons of fluid, EVs have significantly less maintenance needs than ICE vehicles.

Many utilities are excited about the potential for electric cars to serve as battery storage for the grid, using two-way “vehicle-to-grid” technology to capture surplus energy produced during the day at times when demand is low. School buses and other community vehicles with regular daily use profiles are particularly well suited to such a strategy, helping increase the reliability of the grid while reducing electricity costs for all residents of a community.
