EVs have no direct emissions, which makes them great for the air quality of the communities where they are sold. That, combined with the ability to charge at home instead of a gas station, can save drivers a lot of money over time.
In California, for example, drivers can save up to $1,600 per year in fuel and maintenance costs by driving an EV over a typical gasoline-powered car, according to the Alliance for Transportation Electrification and the Sustainable Energy Policy Association. The savings could even help cover the cost of new infrastructure to manage electricity production and distribution in an increasingly electrified future, said ATE Executive Director Phil Jones.
Solar EVs
The newest entrants into the electric-car market are solar models that use a recharging system that uses sunlight to replenish their batteries. These recharging systems can add a quarter to a third of the battery’s charge per day, depending on the amount of available sunlight.
These cars also offer greater range than their battery-powered counterparts. They generally have an EPA-rated range of about 200 miles (320 km) per charge.
They’re not meant for inter-city travel, though, so they don’t have the speed needed to navigate highways or cross bridges.
