Without the need for a bulky internal combustion engine and transmission, designers can create more passenger and cargo space in these models. EVs typically need to be plugged in to recharge, which can take as little as an hour at home using a standard 120 V outlet. You can also plug in at workplaces or at the growing number of public charging stations.
With a battery pack providing hundreds of miles of range, these models are perfect for getting around town. And the best part is, they’re almost always cheaper to operate than a similar gasoline-powered model in the same class.
In fact, they’re so affordable to run that manufacturers can offer them at lower prices and still make a profit. And in some states, you can even get a purchase aid or reduced road taxes to further lower the cost.
Because EVs use less energy than their gasoline-powered counterparts, they can also significantly reduce the emissions that cause climate change. However, while we’re on our way to 100% clean energy (consumption of renewables recently surpassed coal), the fact is that most electricity comes from fossil fuels, which means that switching to EVs will not eliminate vehicle-related greenhouse gas emissions entirely.
