Electric City Vehicles Power About Half a Million Homes
EVs are increasingly becoming the cars of choice for drivers looking to cut down on carbon emissions. With a variety of EV models now available, it’s worth taking a look at how the efficiency of each car compares to see if an EV is right for your driving needs and habits. Besides the obvious EPA-rated range, there are other factors to consider, such as public charging availability and your local climate extremes.
Currently, most EVs are charged at home, which is more convenient for many drivers and also saves money on fuel cost. But as EV ranges continue to rise, more and more drivers are ditching the gas pump altogether and going full electric. As a result, it’s a good idea to know how much electricity your car needs so you can plan accordingly.
A recent study sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy found that EVs have increased electricity demand about the same as conventional vehicles since 2012, while capacity has risen by an average of 12 gigawatts per year (1 GW can power half a million homes). If electric vehicle growth continues at its current pace, it’s important to ensure there are enough renewable resources to meet future demand.
EVs still need periodic service to replace consumables like cabin air filters, wiper blades and tires, so it’s a good idea to find an automaker that offers a network of brick-and-mortar authorized dealers or has a robust mobile service system. Additionally, if you’re interested in an electric model, it’s important to look at its battery warranty and the amount of time you can expect to get back on the road after a charge.
