Electric vehicles use electric motors powered by rechargeable batteries to free their drive from fossil fuels, making them cleaner, quieter, and smoother than traditional gasoline-powered cars. They plug into regular household outlets and can be charged overnight, or refueled on the go at over 51,000 public charging stations in the US. EVs also have lower maintenance costs, and cost less to operate than gas-powered vehicles. EVs can travel up to 330 miles on a full charge, and their driving range is rapidly increasing as technology improves.
The City of Seattle supports the expansion of EV infrastructure, and offers incentives for residents to purchase or lease EVs. This supports the City’s goal of reducing its emissions from ground-level pollutants, and aspires to be one of the leading global cities for low-carbon transportation.
A wide variety of EVs are currently available from major automakers, and many are offered with financing options to make the upfront costs more affordable. EVs can be used to reduce dependence on foreign oil, and their use can help stabilize energy prices.
To help drivers make the right decision for themselves, our EV program has an online tool to compare your driving needs and budget with over 30 makes of EV. We recommend you look at MPGe ratings – a calculation of an electric vehicle’s efficiency, as well as class-leading range figures – to see which models might be a good match for your commute. In addition, watch your speed – a high speed can cause a battery to drain more quickly. And use your regenerative breaking setting to capture kinetic energy for reuse, rather than using conventional braking when slowing or stopping.
