Electric City Vehicles (EVs) Power Our Communities

In a time of intense partisanship, the issue of air pollution is something most Americans agree on: 75% of those surveyed in recent years reported being concerned a great deal or fair amount by the effects of air pollution on their health and wellbeing.1 With that in mind, EVs are one option that can reduce pollution and make our communities healthier.

When shopping for an EV, shoppers typically fixate on the car’s EPA-rated range rating, as that helps determine whether it is a good fit for their driving needs and habits. However, there are other key specifications to consider, such as the efficiency with which the car wrings out every mile from the electricity stored in its battery.

The average EV on the road emits less than 88 grams of greenhouse gas per mile (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2018), but that number can go even lower when a plug-in hybrid or BEV uses regenerative braking to recharge its battery when the driver releases the brake pedal. In addition, a car that doesn’t have a traditional internal combustion engine also requires fewer maintenance items than most ICE vehicles do.

With the right charging infrastructure, people who rent or don’t have a garage at home can also enjoy the benefits of owning an electric vehicle. To that end, Earthjustice is working hard to ensure a robust public charging network is built out nationwide, so it is easy for everyone to get behind the wheel of an EV, and not just those who can afford to buy one.
