Electric vehicles are perfect for commuters with short trips because they have low to no emissions, great acceleration and recyclable braking systems. They’re also inexpensive to operate compared with cars and trucks that burn gasoline. Plus, a federal tax credit and state and utility incentives make them even more affordable.
While premium EV-only models such as Tesla and BMW have helped drive rising EV sales, more mainstream automakers are also introducing new plug-in hybrids and all-electric SUVs. But it’s been challenging to ramp up production of these vehicles because of limited access to critical battery materials. And supply chain disruptions like the one caused by a computer chip shortage are hampering production at many plants.
Despite these challenges, the Detroit Big Three—Ford, GM and Stellantis—have each committed to making their entire vehicle portfolio electric by 2035. And Honda, which has long dabbled in electrified vehicles with the Insight and Civic hybrid, is readying a whole raft of new models.
At the CR test track in Greenville, South Carolina, engineers are testing an upcoming Honda model that will use lithium-ion batteries from Chinese manufacturer SK On. The company is also investing in a Michigan factory to build its own nickel-cobalt-manganese cobalt battery cells, hoping to control its supply chain and qualify for the consumer EV tax credit. In the meantime, a handful of Honda dealers—including one in a Brooklyn neighborhood—are starting to offer EVs for sale.
