In a few months, on a stretch of blacktop near the spot where Detroit introduced America’s first traffic light more than 100 years ago, workers will install the country’s first publicly accessible electrified roadway. The new surface will charge EVs wirelessly while they drive, wait in traffic or park. In the future, a similar infrastructure could help EVs run entirely on renewable electricity produced locally.
As a result, a range of new EVs are being offered for consumers. Some are designed to be electric vehicles from the beginning, while others are plug-in hybrids or extended-range EVs. These models benefit from manufacturers’ increasing experience designing EV powertrains and from having vehicle designs optimized for electric propulsion. They’re also usually more affordable than a comparable gasoline model.
The number of public EV chargers is expected to grow substantially in the coming years. The city’s new plan to prepare for the EV transition includes growing the city-operated fast charging network to over 80 plugs by 2025 and equipping 20 percent of municipal public parking spaces in the five boroughs with Level 2 chargers by 2030.
But as more EVs come onto the streets, there will be additional demands on the grid. To ensure a stable supply of renewable electricity, local power providers must make a number of changes. They’ll need to expand the capacity of transmission lines from western New York, or build new ones. And they’ll need to make sure that the demand for electricity peaks at different times of the day, rather than all at once in the evening, when the most EVs plug in at once.
