A new generation of EVs, powered by batteries and electric motors, is changing the way people move. They’re freeing drivers from the toxins and costs of fossil fuels, and they’re a critical step toward a sustainable energy future.

Automakers in Detroit and around the world are investing billions of dollars in developing new EV models. GM plans to produce 40 percent of its new vehicles with EVs by 2035, while Ford has committed $22 billion to EV development and plans 30 more by 2025.

These new EVs, including the F-150 Lightning and the new Taycan Cross Turismo, are designed to be both fuel-efficient and practical for everyday driving. The Lightning, for example, is rated at 70 MPGe combined and offers a range of 230 miles or more depending on the model.

EVs are also cheaper to fuel than gasoline-powered cars. Several electric power providers in the US offer rate plans that make filling up on electricity more affordable than gasoline.

For drivers, that can be as much as $1,600 per year. Those savings could even be more if technologies allow, said ATE’s Jones and SEPA’s Fitzgerald.

Electric vehicles are also expected to reduce emissions by generating less air pollution than their internal combustion counterparts, said SEPA’s Farley. That’s important, especially as a growing number of nations seek to curb climate change.

Electric vehicles are becoming more popular across the world, despite supply chain challenges such as shortages of semiconductors and raw materials for battery production. Policy measures to fight climate change, including incentives for EVs, have helped drive sales in Europe and China, where a government-approved low-speed EV program has generated six million units.
