The first electric cars were expensive and cumbersome, but now you can get into one that’s nearly as affordable as a gas-powered vehicle. EVs have other advantages, too, like access to restricted express lanes and reduced or free bridge and toll fees. Depending on where you live, you might also benefit from discounted or free electricity and charging stations in workplaces and public spaces.
Tesla has led the way in EV production, with its Model S and Model X vehicles, but other manufacturers are coming on strong as well. American Honda, for example, launched the EV Plus hatchback over 20 years ago and currently sells hybrid versions of its Civic and CR-V models.
Nissan and Hyundai have long had electric SUVs on the market, while Toyota and Porsche are introducing new models that will be fully battery powered. Electric motorcycles are gaining popularity as well, with companies such as BMW and Brammo offering a variety of options.
The world is also moving toward electric trains, with high-speed trains such as France’s double-decker TGV already using electricity rather than diesel fuel to power their engines. Electric trains can travel at much higher speeds than conventional locomotives and, using regenerative brakes, can put braking energy back into the grid instead of wasting it. The electric motors also require less maintenance and can be cooled with water. They consume significantly less oil than conventional locomotives, too. If all road vehicles were electric, it would increase global demand for electricity but decrease the use of fossil fuels and associated emissions.
