Electrifying Transportation
Electrifying transportation is an important part of the transition to a carbon neutral future. It can enable diversification of the fuel mix for transportation, address energy security concerns, and facilitate a clean energy transition.
EVs can be powered by a variety of sources, including water, fossil fuels, solar energy, and nuclear power. Some electric cars can be fast-charged, while others can be charged from a standard 120-volt outlet.
Typically, fully electric vehicles use battery storage to store the electricity required to drive. The range of an EV depends on the type of driving the vehicle is used for. High-performance models can travel up to 400 miles between charges.
Currently, only a small number of charging stations are available in the United States. The majority of EVs are equipped with a Level 1 charger. Some apartment buildings may have a Level 2 charger. A Level 2 charger is more powerful and can recharge an EV in half the time.
There are also plans to install vehicle-to-grid technology, or V2G, which allows cars to recharge from the grid during peak hours, taking on surplus power from renewable sources. Some utilities are excited about the potential of EVs to serve as battery storage.
Many drivers worry that they will be depleted if they don’t have a charging station to recharge their car. Fortunately, the cost of recharging an EV will be comparable to that of gasoline. Customers can pay for their charge using a tap card or program website.
