EVs use electric motors and rechargeable batteries to free your drive from fossil fuels, making it quieter, more energy efficient and better for the environment. They generate significantly fewer emissions (including ozone precursors and particulate matter) than gasoline vehicles, and even more when the electricity comes from renewable sources.
In the Seattle area, many EVs use City Light’s clean, affordable, carbon-free electricity for their daily commute. Most owners can charge their cars overnight at home, and some work locations have chargers for employee use. There are also numerous public charging stations available, including some owned by City Light.
The electric vehicle industry has been growing quickly. Tesla and GM are both building their own charging infrastructure, and Hertz recently announced plans to install fast EV charging hubs at its locations nationwide. The US Department of Transportation’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program is establishing a coast-to-coast network of chargers that will give drivers confidence that they can find an accessible, convenient charging station for long trips.
EVs can be powered by a variety of sources, including natural gas, nuclear power, renewables like wind and solar power, or coal-generated electricity. The technology for storing the energy used by the battery is constantly improving; in 2022, an EV with a 60-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery can travel up to 220 miles on a single charge. The time it takes to add a few miles of range depends on the efficiency of the charging system; one that’s twice as effective can add that same amount of distance in half the time.
