EVs are powered by electricity stored in a rechargeable battery, rather than a traditional gasoline engine and transmission. As such, they have fewer moving parts (no oil changes!) and emit significantly less pollution. They also require a different kind of maintenance: keeping the battery charged to maximum capacity.
For many people, especially those who drive around town and commute short distances, an EV might make a lot of sense. Choosing the right one can be daunting, though. Aside from the usual concerns about cost and range, there are a host of other things to consider. How and where to charge, when and how to service your car, and what about those tax breaks?
While there are lots of excellent choices out there, it’s important to understand that not all EVs are created equal. Some have better EPA combined ratings than others, and the best ones tend to have a much higher rated range than the industry average.
The slick Porsche Taycan, for instance, offers 246 miles of EPA-rated range with its 93.4-kWh pack. This makes it the most efficient EV on the market, beating out such stalwarts as the Honda Clarity Plug-In and Audi e-tron GT with its 83 MPGe.
The biggest factor that will determine an EV’s actual rated range, however, is how and where it’s driven. As a general rule, cruising highway speeds consumes energy more rapidly than city driving, and aerodynamic drag increases with the square of the speed.
