The embrace by EV leaders Ford and GM of Tesla’s charging standard is a win for consumers who can now expect to see more recharging stations in more locations across America. But it’s also a victory for Tesla, the EV industry’s 800-pound gorilla that’s positioned to dictate the terms—and reap the lion’s share of the benefits—of this historic shift from gasoline-powered cars to electric vehicles.
Driving an EV cuts out tailpipe emissions, which are harmful to our environment and considered to be a major driver of climate change. The electricity that charges an EV is often generated by renewable energy sources like solar and wind. However, in the United States, the power grid is still largely powered by fossil fuels. Even so, EVs emit 60-68% less greenhouse gases over their lifetime than gas-powered vehicles.
Electric vehicles are cheaper to operate and maintain than traditional automobiles. They have fewer moving parts, so they require less maintenance and do not need tune-ups or oil changes. Additionally, refueling an EV costs about half as much as filling up with gas. Additionally, many owners save money by taking advantage of off-peak electricity rates while charging at home or using public recharging stations. Plus, many buyers can take advantage of hefty federal and state tax credits to help offset the upfront cost of an EV.
