Electric City Vehicles – How and Where to Charge
Aside from deciding which electric car to buy, there are many other factors to consider. How and where to charge it, when and where to service it, how much it costs to own and those tax breaks that you keep hearing about.
When a buyer of an EV chooses to use their vehicle at a charging station, the onboard charger converts AC power into DC power that can be used by the battery to replenish its range. The process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours.
Those who aren’t comfortable with a long wait can turn to one of the growing number of public charging networks available, such as EVgo. The network operates a fleet of charging stations across the U.S., which can be accessed using a smartphone app. The stations can be found on a map of the app, or by entering your address.
While the charging element may be the most glaring hurdle for consumers considering an EV, it isn’t insurmountable. For example, the EVs designed to operate in most driving scenarios can eliminate range anxiety by plugging in every evening and starting each day with a full battery.
And EVs can be more spacious than similar ICE models because they don’t have to make room for a big engine and transmission. Additionally, they can use their electric motor (or motors) to recapture energy when decelerating, enabling them to slow down almost instantly.
