There are plenty of great EVs for the city, and even some models that will take you on longer trips. But for most urban drivers, a small, simple electric vehicle is all they need to beat the traffic and congestion. Their instant acceleration and pin-sharp handling make navigating busy city streets a breeze.
The big question for the EV revolution is how well the power grid can handle all these new cars that need to be charged. When EVs are plugged in at home during peak demand, their batteries can flow back to the power grid and help reduce system stress until demand slackens again overnight. This is known as vehicle-to-grid technology, and it’s an essential part of the electric grid’s capacity planning.
While it won’t replace gasoline-powered vehicles, these neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) will ease the load on the nation’s strained power grid and help cities clean up their streets from massive trucks and SUVs. New York City DOT, in partnership with Con Edison, has already installed 100 Level 2 charging ports for public use at curbside locations across the five boroughs as part of a four-year pilot program. The company has also partnered with Hertz to install EV charging infrastructure at its Hertz on Demand locations, where they’ll serve rideshare and taxi drivers, car rental customers, and the general public.
