Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
About Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
The switch to an electric vehicle has the potential to make your life even more convenient. You’ll no longer have to stop at the gas station, and you may not need oil changes or other routine maintenance as often because EVs use far fewer moving parts than their ICE counterparts. Plus, many EVs also offer the ability to use regenerative braking to generate energy that can recharge the battery.
But if everyone in your area begins to plug in their cars at the same time, the electricity demand could surge and overburden the system. In that case, EV owners could end up having to visit charging stations infrequently or rely on the utility’s “peaker” hours. Some utilities, such as California’s Pacific Gas & Electric, are working to install chargers that allow electric vehicles to serve as energy storage for the grid by absorbing excess renewables during peak times and returning it when demand is low.
The number of EV models on sale continues to grow quickly, reaching nearly 500 in 2022. The vast majority of those are SUVs and large models, which accounted for about 60% of the available options globally, up from around 40% in 2021. But the number of small models—which can be easier to charge, and are more affordable for people in less-wealthy areas—is growing fast as well. In fact, an announcement by one major European manufacturer suggests that a greater focus on those smaller models is in the works.
