Electric City Vehicles Powering the Grid
The Tesla Model 3 is the best-selling electric car in America, but many manufacturers are also working hard to bring new models to market. Honda, which sells popular Accord and CR-V hybrids to American consumers, plans to launch an EV by 2028 that uses its own proprietary solid-state batteries. It’s not the first time the company has dabbled in electrified vehicles; its EV Plus hatchback went on sale over 20 years ago, and it also introduced a small SUV in collaboration with Sony called Afeela that previews an eventual production vehicle.
Ford is preparing to roll out the F-150 Lightning, its battery electric pickup truck. It has a 230- to 320-mile driving range depending on the model, and it can haul up to 10,000 pounds of gear. Unlike gasoline-powered trucks, its battery-powered version can be used to help power homes and businesses during a grid emergency thanks to its ability to export energy.
EV drivers who can take advantage of the capability will need to have the right setup at home, and some models don’t come equipped for it out of the box; the capacity is usually added as an option. A bill currently in the California Legislature (SB 233) could require all EVs and charging equipment to be capable of bidirectional power sharing.
To drive sales higher, states need to make it easier to adopt EVs. That includes lowering the price of the vehicles and their charging infrastructure, as well as enacting policies that encourage adoption. Some examples include rebates and mandates, as well as a push to reach the Biden ZEV goals of 10% by 2030.
