Electric City Vehicles (EVs) Power at Home and at Public DC Fast Chargers
EVs have 17 moving parts, compared to 200 or more for the typical internal-combustion engine (ICE) car. That makes them more efficient, more reliable and simpler to maintain. They also cost less than ICE vehicles to buy and operate in the long run.
EV owners can charge their cars at home using the same 120-volt outlet that powers clothes dryers and electric ovens (called Level 1 charging), or at public DC fast chargers (known as Level 2 charging). Companies such as Amazon, Trane Technologies and bp are committing to build out the country’s network of EV fast chargers. Hertz is partnering with bp to bring EV charging infrastructure into its locations for rideshare and taxi drivers and car rental customers, as well as to the general public in high-demand areas.
The National Automobile Dealers Association and Center for Sustainable Energy are committing to train its 16,000 dealers to sell and service EVs in 2023. Exelon, one of the nation’s largest utilities, is committing to expand its customer-facing tools and resources in 2023 to help homeowners, renters and businesses create electrification plans and estimate their total costs of ownership savings.
