Electric Cars For City Driving
The best electric cars for city driving are small in size, with zippy acceleration and pin-sharp handling that make it easier to maneuver through traffic. They’re also packed with tech geared for urban drivers, from smart safety features to a convenient way to charge your car on the go.
EVs can plug into standard 120-volt outlets (called Level 1 charging) at home, but a more reliable option is to install a charger in your garage or at work. Most EVs can be charged to full capacity in about four hours at an approved public charger, and some can be fast-charged to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.
In the future, utility companies may add a new function to some of these charging stations: Vehicle-to-grid technology. The idea is that during the day, when demand for electricity peaks, electric vehicles would take on surplus power from renewable sources and then, as demand drops in the evening, return some of it back to the grid. Pacific Gas & Electric is working to develop this system in California.
As more people buy EVs, new infrastructure is needed to support them. Earthjustice is advancing policies to build more workplace and public charging locations, so that the opportunity to have an electric vehicle isn’t limited to those who own a house with a driveway. We’re also fighting to defend the ZEV mandate in California, a law that requires a certain percentage of all vehicles sold in the state be zero emissions.
