Challenges Faced by Electric Vehicles in New York City

Electrified vehicles are becoming a mainstream alternative to internal combustion engines. They save fuel and the environment. They also cost less than gasoline. However, there are several challenges facing EVs at this time.

The first challenge is finding charging stations. While there are a few in NYC, the existing network is relatively small. The city has plans to install 120 Level 2 chargers in curbside locations across the five boroughs. These stations can recharge EVs at home or work.

Another challenge is the price of electricity. The cost of electricity for 100 kilometres is less than EUR 4. This makes it cheaper than driving an internal combustion engine for the same distance.

Charging times are not consistent. A vehicle’s range depends on a number of factors, including battery capacity, model and driving style. Most EVs can travel 100 kilometres with 15 kWh of battery power. EVs with higher range can go more than 400 miles between charges.

Drivers may also worry about depleting their batteries if they do not have access to a charging station. There are plans to install 120 Level 2 charging stations in the demonstration project. These stations can be used by customers using their smartphone.

Some of these stations are located in public parking lots. These hubs will feature up to four DC fast chargers. These stations can recharge a car in about 20 minutes.

Drivers can also charge overnight in a workplace or multi-family housing. A federal tax credit is available for EV purchases. The tax credit is based on the battery capacity and the vehicle’s size.
