Electric City Vehicles
EVs are a great solution for hectic city driving, where nimble acceleration and no gears to shift make it easy to get around town. However, they also provide a relaxed drive when you’re taking longer journeys on the motorway or going to the airport.
Some manufacturers like Tesla are building battery electric vehicles that can easily take on long distances with a full charge. Others are making plug-in hybrids that can switch to petrol or diesel if the battery needs topping up. And then there are the fuel cell cars that use hydrogen to create electricity and carbon dioxide.
But the EV market hasn’t been without its challenges. In the US, for example, some dealers have been pushing back against OEM programs dictating how consumers can reserve EVs and prescribing how they have to be sold or traded in. This is a big concern because it threatens to derail the transition to EVs and reduce consumer confidence in the technology.
Ford has been a major player in the electric car scene with the launch of its new MachE sedan and its ambitious Blue Oval plant in Stanton, Tennessee, which will house a factory to produce batteries as well as a new EV assembly plant for the Lightning model that will open in 2023.
It will employ 6000 people, and could annually produce enough cells for 1.3 million electric vehicles with 100-kilowatt-hour batteries.
