The transition to a clean energy economy is underway, and automakers like Tesla Ford GM are betting on millions of new electric vehicles over the next decade. This is a huge shift, but it will require major planning to ensure the nation’s grid can handle the extra demands.
Battery Technology
Electric vehicle batteries are becoming more efficient and affordable. And while the initial cost of an EV may be higher than a conventional vehicle, the savings on fuel costs will likely outweigh the purchase price over time.
Tax Credits
The federal Qualified Plug-In Electric-Drive Motor Vehicle Tax Credit can reduce the total cost of an EV purchase by up to $7,500 for new purchases and $2,250 for used EVs. Additional state and utility incentives can also help.
State and Local Incentives
States with strong incentives can drive adoption of EVs faster. California’s 10.4% electric vehicle sales rate has been driven by strong state policies. And the state has set a goal to phase out the sale of gasoline-powered cars and light trucks by 2035.
Policymakers and utilities are also working to develop programs that will allow drivers to charge their EVs when electricity is cheapest and most plentiful. These so-called “optimized charging” programs will reduce the demand on electricity providers, which could save them tens of billions in capital investments.
Driver-to-Grid
Some EVs have the option to export their power to the grid, which would help to reduce peak demands and allow for increased use of renewable energy. In California, a system called vehicle-to-grid, or V2G, would let drivers take on excess solar and wind power during the day and then return it to the grid as demand drops in the evening.
