Electric City Vehicles Cars Power

Electric City Vehicles Cars Power

As cities and states move to encourage more plug-in drivers, they need to make sure their electric grid can handle them. Seattle, for instance, aims to have nearly a third of its residents drive EVs by 2030—and that will mean 30 million kilowatt-hours per day, enough to power 1.7 million homes. One startup, Wink Motors, thinks it has a solution. Its neighborhood electric vehicles (NEVs) are engineered to meet abbreviated safety regulations and operate at speeds of up to 25 mph—meaning they’re not exactly designed for highway driving, but they could be just fine for around-town errands.

EVs are powered by an electric motor that gets its energy from a rechargeable battery. There are a few different types of EVs, but most fall into two categories: pure electric cars and extended range electric vehicles. Pure electric vehicles are a fully electric car without a gas or diesel engine, while extended-range electric vehicles have a small internal combustion engine that generates electricity to extend the driving range.

Regardless of the type, the technology is still in its early days. But the big three US automakers, Ford, General Motors and Stellantis (which last year absorbed Chrysler), are committed to putting EVs on more of their lots. They’re also backing the development of national charging infrastructure, supporting American manufacturing and offering buyer tax credits. In addition, they’re working to make it easier for fleets of EVs to find their way into apartment complexes, hotels and corporate environments.
