Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
As the world moves toward a cleaner, greener economy, governments, utilities and automakers are working together to accelerate the rollout of electric vehicles. They’re using tax incentives, subsidies and other policies to drive the EV market and create jobs.
Despite a growing demand for EVs, there are still a number of challenges that need to be overcome. The biggest one is making sure the power grid can accommodate a steady flow of EVs.
Utilities and power generators will have to spend billions of dollars creating that additional capacity, but the cost could be offset if utilities recover some of those costs from ratepayers. Some utilities have already begun installing chargers for electric vehicles and experimenting with vehicle-to-grid technology, which would allow cars to take on extra energy during the day and send it back to the grid when demand is low.
But to be successful, the EV industry must also address two other important challenges: charging infrastructure and the electricity grid’s ability to handle a large increase in electric vehicle usage. And for that, the nation needs to develop an EV charging strategy as early as possible.
In New York City, DOT and the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability are laying out a series of initiatives to dramatically expand access to public charging across the five boroughs. These actions will make the city a national leader in preparing for the EV transition, and help ensure that drivers in NYC have the opportunity to get around town in an EV that charges up quickly and efficiently.
