Electric vehicles can be powered by batteries, flywheels or supercapacitors. They typically offer a longer driving range, faster acceleration and more utility than conventional vehicles. They can also be charged by plugging into the grid, reducing their operating costs and carbon footprints.
A new generation of battery electric vehicles has ascended from Tesla’s original Model X and the Nissan Leaf to Ford’s all-electric Fusion Energi, F-150 Lightning and Transit cargo van. These models are optimized from the beginning for electric operation and can achieve greater efficiencies than previous generations.
As these and other all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle models enter the market, Austin Energy is working to ensure that City streets are ready for them. The utility’s electric vehicle and emerging technologies team stopped by last week’s work session to bring Council up to speed on upcoming improvements to the city’s charging network and service programs.
