Electric City Vehicles – Which Ones Should You Consider?

Electric City Vehicles

The list of EVs that will be available in the US in 2022 and beyond continues to grow. But which ones should you consider for your commute, road trips or weekend adventures? This tool lets you enter your budget and driving needs and compare more than 30 EV models, making it easy to find the right match for you.

EVs can range from 80 to over 330 miles on a charge, and their drive range is increasing with new battery technology. But it’s important to understand how EPA range ratings differ from one manufacturer to the next, and which factors might affect your real-world driving experience.

As with gas vehicles, EVs’ EPA combined city and highway ratings don’t account for air resistance or aerodynamic drag, which increases as speed rises. That’s why EVs are often judged on their ability to do most of their traveling at steady, high speeds—and why we test them in that environment, too.

While the Big Three automakers are accelerating their EV production goals, they’re still lagging behind Tesla in terms of market share and consumer interest. But the legacy manufacturers’ eye-popping investments in EV manufacturing—including the Ford Ion Park battery factory near Detroit and the GM Factory Zero facility in Hamtramck, where the Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Rivian R1T pickup are made—are helping to make their vehicles more affordable and appealing. They’re also building businesses around their EV platforms, such as the in-house Ford Innovation Lab incubator that helped launch BrightDrop, which is contracting to produce commercial EVs for FedEx and Walmart, and the Cruise self-driving car company, which will produce its first ride-hailing and rental-car shuttles next year at the GM Factory Zero plant.
