Electric City Vehicles Power the Power Industry

When a potential EV buyer sits down to choose their next car, questions about how and where they will charge it and whether or not they have the necessary home charging infrastructure can be daunting. Those questions, combined with questions about what to look for in an EV and those tax breaks they hear so much about, can make a switch from an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle feel like a huge undertaking.

With battery and efficiency technology advancing quickly, EVs are getting cheaper to buy and operate. They’re also starting to make more sense in a variety of contexts, with companies such as Porsche offering dedicated EVs like the Taycan, which comes in both base and GTS models and offers up to 246 miles of EPA-rated range. EVs are also often more spacious than ICE vehicles in their class, as designers don’t need to create space for an engine or transmission and can focus on passenger and cargo volume.

EV drivers can further cut their energy costs by driving efficiently—which means staying at a steady speed, using regenerative braking, and limiting heating/cooling and accessory use. And while Earthjustice is still working hard to bring 100% clean, renewable energy to the nation’s electricity grid, it’s important to note that even EVs powered by coal-dominated utilities are significantly cleaner than their fossil fuel counterparts. Electric cars can help the power industry achieve more sustainable operations by serving as a storage system during periods of high demand through vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration.
