EVs are different from gas-powered cars in that their energy efficiency is measured separately from the driving range, and both figures are affected by the type of charger used to charge them. EVs with greater energy efficiency will require less time to add miles of range, because charging losses can be proportional to the rate at which electricity is consumed during driving.
As with EPA fuel-economy estimates for gas vehicles, there are separate ratings for a car’s city and highway mileage. Unlike many gas-powered vehicles, which have much higher highway ratings than their city ratings, most EVs’ highway efficiency is significantly lower than its city rating, because of the way they generate and use energy when traveling at high speeds.
As the EV market expands, utilities must plan for a massive increase in demand for their services. To prevent outages, some states are encouraging drivers to plug in their EVs during off-peak hours at home or at public charging stations, like the one Seattle City Light opened last month in an industrial neighborhood south of downtown.
