Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
A growing number of people are choosing electric vehicles to reduce pollution, conserve energy, save money and reduce their carbon footprint. As they do, automakers are shifting their focus to EVs and offering incentives to help them sell more electric cars.
Why It Matters
The growth in EV sales is helping the power grid. But it could also increase costs if a surge in EVs forces utilities to produce more electricity than they can handle.
In places like the Northwest, where electricity consumption has remained relatively stagnant since 2000, increased EV use could help push power demand closer to utilities’ capacity. That, in turn, would generate revenue for the providers and lower rates for all customers.
Electric Trains
Electrified trains can have many advantages over diesel-powered ones, including better power-to-weight ratios and faster acceleration. They also can have regenerative brakes that put their energy back into the electrical grid rather than wasting it on braking.
Battery Electric Passenger Trains
There are a wide variety of electric passenger trains on the market. Some, like the TGV in France and Switzerland’s double-deck trains, are capable of carrying heavy loads such as coal and other materials, while others, such as the US’s GM Bolt EV, are mainly used for shorter trips.
Electric Trams
Trams are the most energy efficient form of public transportation, according to research. They may be able to cut the amount of liquid fossil fuel used for transportation by two-thirds or more.
