Cars like the Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Kona are proving that affordable electric vehicles don’t need to be a second-class status symbol. These models — and a few new ones from Tesla, a refocused Ford and GM and a still-to-winnow-out collection of EV startups — can take on a range of duties, including shopping trips, commutes to work, school runs and weekend jaunts.
These small EVs typically get around 40-60 miles between charges, depending on the model. They can also run on solar power, a feature that reduces the amount of time the battery needs to charge from a wall outlet. Compared with a gas-powered SUV, these models have lower speeds and aren’t suitable for long highway drives, but they can provide plenty of range for most city driving.
With a growing number of EVs on the roads, the national grid will need to increase capacity, analysts say. New York, for example, is expected to have 2 million electric cars in 2040, and its power system could be stretched thin by the extra demand. New transmission lines are coming online to carry the juice from upstate, but they won’t be enough for a city as large as New York.
Some experts are pushing for more public charging locations, and even a few stations in parking garages and office buildings that people can use during the day to recharge their vehicles. That way, they can drive an EV without having to worry about making sure they have a place to plug in at home.
