Electric City Vehicles

Cars that run on electricity, rather than gasoline, make by far the most sense in the cities. They don’t cause local air pollution and their ranges — which are getting vastly longer each year — are perfect for the slow, stop-and-go traffic of urban driving.

They also need less maintenance and can be refueled in as little as three hours with Level 3 public DC fast charging stations, which can add 100 miles to an EV’s range in about that time. Plus, they’re smaller, lighter and more maneuverable. As a result, they’re well suited for tight parking spaces.

However, the transition to EVs isn’t going to happen overnight. And it could strain the power grid, which is already overburdened in many cities. It would require massive amounts of new generation capacity if nearly all cars were electric. That’s because generating electricity is often dependent on fossil fuels, which emit greenhouse gases when burned.

The good news is that EVs’ energy efficiency would help cut the demand for fossil fuels. And EV batteries have a much higher power-to-weight ratio than internal combustion engines, which means that EVs can accelerate quickly and go further on a charge.

Still, dealers have a lot of questions about the transition to EVs. They’ll have to decide whether to invest in charging infrastructure — which costs from $100,000 to $1 million per dealership, according to a study by the National Automobile Dealers Association — or wait to see how the market develops.
