Electric City Vehicles Powering the Electricity Grid

EVs are great city cars, with lots of usable real-world range and plenty of the latest technology. You’ll find they have a smooth and quiet ride and can easily accelerate to highway speeds if you need to. They also don’t produce local air pollution, so you can feel good about driving one around town.

If you’re considering an EV, it’s important to think about where and how you’ll charge it. EVs are available at dealerships that have installed charging stations for their customers, and you can also install a home charger (using the same type of 240-volt outlet used to power your washer or electric dryer called Level 2 charging). Seattle aims to have nearly a third of its residents drive an EV by 2030, so it’s important that our electricity grid is ready for them.

Electric cars are lighter than traditional vehicles and have much better power-to-weight ratios, which means they can accelerate quickly and get up to high top speeds. They can also use regenerative braking to put energy back into the electrical grid.

Unlike Tesla, which makes its own batteries for its electric vehicles, Ford will partner with a Chinese battery supplier to build a plant in Michigan that could produce enough lithium-iron-phosphate cells annually to power 600,000 Ford Lightning plug-in electric cars. It’s part of a bigger project known as “Blue Oval City,” which also includes a plant to build the cars themselves in Stanton, Tennessee.
