Electric City Vehicles Cars Power
While EV sales may still be modest, their share of the auto market is expected to grow rapidly. That means the electricity that fuels them will also have to grow. That’s why Seattle City Light and other utilities are getting ready now to make sure that the grid can handle them.
EVs use rechargeable batteries to power their electric motors, freeing them from dependence on gasoline. And they are easy to charge — most can plug into a standard 120 V outlet, or if you have an EV charger installed at home, into the same kind of 240 V outlets that power laundry dryers and electric stoves (called Level 2 charging). You can also plug in at work or at a growing number of public charging stations.
But EVs can do even more than that. Many can be used to send energy back to the grid, helping to keep homes and businesses running during power outages or when the system is stressed by long heat waves or powerful storms linked to climate change. That’s already happening with a few pioneering EV owners, including John and Rachelle Reigard, who own an electric pickup truck that sends energy from its batteries to their house in Nashville when the power is out.
Ford and GM are both developing vehicles to take this capability a step further. One is a small SUV called the Pear, which will be available in 2024. It will run almost exclusively on electricity until its battery is nearly depleted, then switch to a hybrid mode using both gasoline and electricity. The Reigards and other EV owners who are experimenting with backup power say their experiences have been mostly positive. But energy experts warn that frequently switching between driving, supplying power to the home or grid, and returning to battery-only driving will quickly degrade an EV’s battery, reducing its range.
