An electric-car battery supplies the power needed to propel a vehicle through most everyday driving situations. EVs can be recharged at home with a special 240 V outlet or charging system and in a growing number of public charging stations across the country. The cost of electricity is usually significantly less than that of gasoline, making EVs more affordable to operate over long distances, where fuel costs are highest.
Electric cars also are quieter, removing the drone of traditional engines. They have instant torque, which can be especially useful when accelerating through slow-moving traffic in cities. Most are automatic-only, meaning there is no clutch to wear out and their near-silent operation makes for a relaxing ride.
Several companies are developing ways to make it easier for people to combine solar panels, home batteries and electric vehicles. Oliver Phillips, chief operating officer of Qmerit, a company that installs EVs, said the technology would allow users to “bulletproof” their homes against blackouts and other problems caused by power shortages. Energy executives warned that frequent use of EVs to send power back to the grid could degrade the batteries and reduce their range over time.
Despite the initial sticker shock, many EVs are cheaper to own than conventional vehicles, and a few are nearly as inexpensive to operate, thanks to federal tax credits and state rebates. In addition, many models can be leased for a monthly payment that is similar to what most consumers pay for a traditional car.
