In the future, it’s likely that many vehicles will run on electricity rather than gasoline. That’s because EVs can be used to send energy back to the grid, which could help relieve some of the load on an already-strained national infrastructure.
GM, Ford, and Stellantis each independently announced plans to accelerate their EV sales by 40% to 50% over the next few years (Ford in particular has recently committed to building at least 40 percent of its global vehicles to be EVs by 2035). But the big question remains: How do you convince people that electric cars are just as convenient, affordable, and exciting as traditional vehicles?
Tesla has made significant investments in developing its electric vehicles. For example, its Gigafactory in Nevada has created jobs for over 8,000 people and is expected to be producing about 25,000 cars per year by 2020.
It also has a production plant in China where the battery packs for its vehicles are manufactured. Those batteries are then shipped to the Lake Orion, Michigan, factory where the Bolt EVs are assembled.
The Bolt EV is one of the first mass-produced all-electric cars in the world and the plant will produce about 300 to 400 a day. That means the company will soon have a serious competitive edge in the rapidly expanding EV market.
In addition to the environmental benefits, EVs are also becoming more popular because of their lower fuel costs. Unlike gas-powered vehicles, which often use up to 30 gallons of fuel in a single tank, an electric car usually only uses a fraction of its battery for driving. This is called miles-per-gallon efficiency, or MPGe.
