Electric City Vehicles (EV) are cars that use electricity instead of gasoline. Their range is measured in miles, not gallons. And, unlike gas, electric cars can be recharged quickly. In a matter of minutes, a battery pack can be exchanged for a fresh one.
Most EVs can travel 200 miles on a single charge. Some of the more advanced models can even go over 400 miles between charges. However, EVs consume more power at highway speeds, which means that their range is reduced. Using air conditioning or heating can also reduce the range of an EV, so drivers should consider the battery capacity of the vehicle before driving long distances.
Electric vehicles can be a great way to reduce carbon emissions and save on energy. Seattle wants nearly 30 percent of its residents to use electric vehicles by 2030. In fact, Washington state ranks third in the country in the per-capita adoption of plug-in cars. The city also provides electric charging stations for its citizens.
NYC has an ambitious plan to expand public charging options. The plan outlines eight initiatives that would help make the city an EV powerhouse. It calls for 20 percent of its municipal parking spaces to have Level 2 chargers by 2025, and for 10,000 public charging stations to be installed by 2030.
