Electric City Vehicles Cars Power

In the mid 1990s, American consumers started shifting away from fuel-efficient cars in favor of larger sport utility vehicles. But a wave of state and federal incentive programs is changing that. It’s encouraging people to switch to electric vehicles, which are less expensive to operate than traditional gas-powered cars.

But it’s also requiring plants like Orion Assembly in Detroit to build more electric vehicles and make a big investment. It means converting sales and service staff to EVs, installing charging stations and upgrading equipment.

Orion has more than 1,000 employees in its union branch, Local 5960, and it’s making the EV transition one of its highest priorities. It’s also committing to a goal of operating 5,000 electric vehicles by June 2023.

To meet this goal, Orion Assembly has committed to purchasing seven all-electric refuse trucks. The agency is also working on a deal to replace some of its garbage trucks with EVs and on an order for electric buses.

The electric-powered cars and trucks sold by Tesla have long been the kings of the EV world, with sales now up to more than half a million. That figure will continue to grow, thanks to more new models from the manufacturer.

GM

The Chevy Volt, Chevy Bolt and GMC Bolt EUV are also making their way into American streets as more and more states pass electric-vehicle mandates. That’s why Biden, who was at the Detroit auto show last month, made his pitch to boost GM and its Detroit manufacturing operations, arguing that GM has a better track record than Ford or Nissan with producing EVs.
