A key factor to consider is range. An EV’s range is determined by how much energy it uses to move from a charging station to a destination. If you plan to travel long distances, you must plan for a large buffer between the EPA combined range rating and the range you can expect to drive.
Although energy costs for electric vehicles are lower than conventional vehicles, the initial cost of purchasing an electric car may be higher. However, as battery technologies improve and production increases, the price should eventually be comparable to a conventional vehicle. Further, federal and state tax credits may help to offset the initial costs.
Another key difference between an electric vehicle and a conventional car is that it does not emit tailpipe pollutants. The fuel used in an electric vehicle can come from renewable sources, such as wind or solar power. Compared to internal combustion engines, electric vehicles also require much less maintenance than their gas-powered counterparts. Using electric vehicles also helps mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
