Electric Vehicles and the Future of Transportation

While it may seem unlikely that electric vehicles will take over the world’s transportation system anytime soon, some automakers are considering electrification plans for the future. They do so to meet regulatory requirements and remain competitive in the changing market. For example, several major automakers recently announced their intention to transition to a fully electric future by 2021. They have also stated that they will bring at least a dozen new models to the market by that time. Some automakers are even getting ahead of the game by building all-electric versions of current models.

Many EVs can travel more than 200 miles on a full charge. More advanced models can reach 400 miles between charges. While electric cars are less powerful than gas-powered vehicles, they can perform well in start-stop traffic, such as during rush hour. However, when driven at a steady highway speed, an EV’s battery is used up more quickly. Electric cars also tend to consume more battery power while running heaters and air conditioners. Drivers may worry that their range will be compromised if they’re not near a charging station. In order to prevent this, they can either recharge their cars at home or take advantage of charging stations while out and about.

Electricity demand fluctuates during the day, and peaks in the early evening. The increased demand for electricity could overwhelm the power grid, forcing utilities to provide more power than they can produce. However, this situation could be avoided if utilities could increase the number of chargers in their service areas. For example, Pacific Gas & Electric plans to install 7,500 charging stations in its service areas.
