Electric City Vehicles (EVs)
EVs use electric motors powered by rechargeable batteries, freeing your drive from fossil fuels. They are clean, quiet and convenient to fuel. EVs operate on the city’s clean, affordable electricity and are an important way to help achieve Seattle’s community climate recovery goals.
Electrifying vehicles are also more fun to drive. Their instant torque provides powerful acceleration and can be adjusted with the accelerator pedal. To maximize your EV’s range, drive at lower speeds and avoid rapid acceleration, and use the energy-recovering regenerative breaking settings. When stopping, try to leave plenty of space for your vehicle to slow down before braking.
Many automakers are betting big on EVs. Tesla, for example, has a new factory in California that can produce thousands of cars a week. Ford’s BlueOval plant will make multiple electric models, using a battery platform called UltiMobility that can be adapted to different vehicles and uses. It will use cheaper lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, which are more durable than nickel, cobalt or manganese batteries currently used in most EVs.
Many electric car owners do not need to use public charging stations because they charge their vehicles at home or work. EVs can be charged by plugging into any regular outlet (typically 120V or higher) in the same place you would plug in your cell phone charger. MOS is expanding the public charging network, including a number of DC fast chargers and Level 2 chargers in City-owned garages and lots.
